Analyze Your Scooter's Factory IP Rating
Most electric scooters carry an IPX4 rating (protection against minor water splashes). Identify the key entry points where water can seep in: the handlebar display panel, the wire routing ports in the folding stem, and the seams of the bottom deck plate.

Seal the Dashboard Screen Panel
Water entry through the power button is the leading cause of shorted dashboards. Remove the dashboard bezel, apply a thin bead of silicone sealant around the inside edge of the plastic screen window, and press it back in place. Alternatively, stretch a waterproof silicone sleeve cover over the handlebars.

Apply Conformal Coating to Internal Circuitry
Open the bottom deck and access the controller (ESC) and dashboard PCBs. Unplug the battery. Clean the boards with rubbing alcohol, then brush on two thin coats of MG Chemicals 422B conformal coating. This provides a microscopically thin waterproof barrier directly over the solder points and chip components.

Install a Neoprene Gasket on the Deck Cover
Scrape away any old rubber foam seal from the deck cover. Wipe the surface clean with alcohol. Apply self-adhesive neoprene gasket tape around the perimeter of the battery deck compartment. Screw the bottom plate back down firmly, ensuring the gasket is compressed evenly.

Waterproof Wire Entry Grommets and Glands
Locate where cables enter the metal frame. Check for loose rubber grommets. Push the grommet firmly in place, and apply a liberal dollop of neutral cure silicone sealant around the cable exit to fill any remaining air gaps.

Understanding IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating system defines a product's resistance to dust and liquid entry. An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit represents protection against solid particles (0-6), and the second digit represents protection against liquids (0-9). Understanding these values helps you assess how much waterproofing work your specific scooter needs.
Most electric scooters are rated IPX4, meaning they can handle minor splashes from any direction but cannot withstand water jets or submersion. Upgrading your scooter with gaskets and silicone sealant can elevate its resistance to IPX6 levels, protecting it from heavy rain and road spray, though it should still never be submerged.

Conformal Coating: The Ultimate Electronics Shield
Even with the best gaskets, temperature changes can cause air to contract inside the deck, sucking in humid air through microscopic holes. Once inside, this moisture condenses on the cold metal controller casing, leading to corrosion. Applying conformal coating directly to the PCB prevents this moisture from touching the active circuit tracks, stopping short-circuits in their tracks. It is the single most effective protection you can apply to your electronics.
BMS Sensor Warning
When applying conformal coating to a smart BMS board, do not cover the temperature sensor thermistors (small black drops at the end of thin wires). Coating them can insulate them from the battery heat, leading to delayed temperature readings.
