Measure Chain Wear (Stretch)
Insert the chain wear indicator tool between the chain links. If the tool drops flat into the links at the 0.5% or 0.75% wear mark, your chain is stretched. On mid-drive e-bikes, you must replace the chain at 0.5% wear (compared to 0.75% for acoustic bikes) to prevent rapid wear of the cassette gears.

Shift to the Smallest Cog
Before removal, shift your rear derailleur to the smallest sprocket (highest gear). This releases tension from the derailleur cage arm, making it much easier to handle the chain and measure the correct length.

Break the Old Chain
Locate the quick-link (if installed) and use quick-link pliers to squeeze the plates together, releasing the link. If there is no quick-link, position your chain breaker tool over any regular chain rivet, turn the handle clockwise to push the pin out, and separate the chain ends.

Sizing the New Chain
Lay the old chain flat on a table alongside the new chain. Align the links. Mark the link on the new chain that matches the length of the old chain. Alternatively, wrap the new chain around the largest rear sprocket and the front chainring (bypassing the derailleur) and add two full links (one inner, one outer) to find the correct length. Use the chain breaker to push out the excess link rivet.

Route the New Chain through the Derailleur
Thread the new chain over the front chainring, over the cassette cog, and down through the derailleur cage. Pay close attention to the jockey wheels: the chain must run over the top pulley, behind the metal guide tab on the cage, and around the bottom pulley. Threading the chain on the wrong side of the metal guide tab will cause loud rubbing and damage the derailleur.

Install the Quick-Link
Insert one half of the quick-link connector into each open end of the chain. Fit the links together. Pull the chain ends apart until the quick-link pins snap into place. To lock it securely, rotate the wheel until the quick-link is on the top run of the drivetrain. Hold the rear wheel firm and press down hard on the pedal; this applies chain tension and snaps the link locked.

Understanding Chain Stretch
The term "chain stretch" is somewhat of a misnomer. The steel side plates of the chain do not physically stretch. Instead, the elongation of the chain is caused by wear on the internal steel pins and the bushings they rotate within. As microscopic metal particles are worn away by friction, the clearances between the pins and bushings increase. Since a typical chain has over 110 links, a wear of just 0.1mm per pin adds up to an overall chain elongation of over 11mm, causing the chain pitch to mismatch the tooth spacing on the cassette.
Riding with a stretched chain concentrates the motor's power onto the tips of fewer cassette teeth, eroding the metal rapidly and leading to skipped gears. Below is a maintenance schedule checklist to maximize your e-bike drivetrain life.

How to Select the Correct Chain Lubricant
Lubrication selection is critical for e-bike longevity. Dry lubes are paraffin-wax based and are excellent for dusty or dry conditions, as they do not attract grit. However, they wash off easily in the rain. Wet lubes are oil-based and stay on in wet, muddy conditions, but they act like a magnet for dirt, forming a black grinding paste if not cleaned frequently. For high-torque mid-drives, wax-based hot-melt immersion or specialized high-pressure synthetic lubes are highly recommended.
Shift Under Light Load
To extend chain and cassette life, ease up on pedal pressure for a fraction of a second when shifting gears. Shifting under full motor torque causes intense mechanical grinding and can bend cassette cogs or snap chain links.
